Chapter 1: Salem Massachusetts 1834 Standing silently next to the door was a thin, gaunt man, with blond hair hanging straight to his shoulders. He wore a sailor’s clothes, skin showing ashen and mottled, broken by vivid blue eyes that bore a desperate, stricken look. He stared hard at John, eyes following him as he approached the door. John noticed the man. He knew it could not be possible, but the fellow looked somewhat familiar. He was uncomfortable with the man’s steady gaze, but, at the same time feeling that he knew him, John returned a polite smile. “Hello,” he said. The man did not respond, but his head lifted in pleased surprise. His eyes continued to stare intently at John, now with an air of affectionate familiarity. John’s smile wavered, but he kept it sturdily up. Still the man said nothing. He glanced back toward Iris. “Should we try?” He indicated the door. She smiled at the man. He did not move his gaze from her husband. She giggled in her brittle way. “Onward,” she said to John, “into the unknown.” John sent another cautious smile toward the strange man, who continued his silent watch. He opened the door and went in. |
