Chapter : The Warning John tapped his foot. He remained standing silently behind the captain, staring at the sweaty short hairs on the back of his thick neck. “Because,” he said at last, “it is bad luck?” He watched the captain’s form convulse as he snorted in disgust. “Luck!” he spat. “Bilgewater!” He turned to regard John, then stare hard at Iris. “Though to most it is bad luck when a crew handles a wife!” he shouted. “And tosses her husband to the blue!” John stepped back. He blinked in confusion, then looked back at Iris. She returned his gaze with blue wide eyes open, unable to suggest anything more. John set his jaw, inwardly lamenting that this job must fall to him, and began once more. “Well,” he said, “we’re really in quite a bind, you see, as we need to get across to establish our new home, and I understand this will be one of the last crossings--” The captain turned away. “And you see we’ve got all our valuables,” John continued, undaunted. “All the wedding gifts we’ve received, our silver, all packed away for the passage, and we really,” he impatiently stamped his foot, “we really cannot turn back.”
