Chapter 3: Eurydice “It must be fun to sail with a group of friends all over,” Iris said with her amiable smile. “Grow to know everyone in your crew, hear their stories. These men must be your good mates,” she said, attempting to turn a sea phrase. “It’s sweet of you to come pick them up.” “Ah lady, I’ve never seen these men before in my life. Though of course I have, looking all alike as they do!” He let loose his quick, sharp laugh again. “They’ll come to it on ship soon enough, and how they’ll howl then! Oh, I wish you could see that tender phenomenon! That’ll be an education for you!” He laughed again. John shared in his laugh, leaning back in his seat, wishing to ingratiate himself to the common men he hoped to prove himself to on sea. Then a thought visibly crossed his face, his expression changed, and he leaned intently forward to the sailor. “But,” he asked, “are these men aware that they are joining your crew?” Iris turned to look at him, having never considered the thought. Wiley looked at him, smiled a big, broad smile, and began to whistle.
